2011 BX Craftsmanship Award Recipient

The Craftsman:  Sam Ciminero of Smoot Construction
His Winning Work:  The installation of CMU, brick, glazed block and slate brick associated with the café/restroom building and band shell at Scioto Mile Promenade and Park

Craftsman Sam Ciminero is responsible for the masonry work performed on the café/restroom building and the band shell in the park at Scioto Mile.

The project included 16-inch glazed block in the restrooms, with brick and Vermont slate on the curved exterior surfaces.

Working with a crew of 14, Ciminero served as both project engineer and craftsman. In the planning stages, he developed detailed shop drawings that allowed for the proper placement of each unit. In the field, he created plywood templates for each of the radius walls and used them as his straight edges to maintain the contour.

Working with slate was a new experience for Ciminero. The mortar used on the non-porous material required special attention; and the delicate, layered pieces were cut to create a random pattern.

A member of Bricklayers Local Union 55, Ciminero has been employed by

Smoot Construction for four of his nine years in the industry.

A first-time Craftsmanship Award recipient, Ciminero has also worked on the Knowlton School of Architecture and the Student Union at The Ohio State University, along with the entrance to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and the Rich Street Parking Garage.
