2011 BX Craftsmanship Award Recipient

The Craftsman:  Doug Shawver of George J. Igel & Co., Inc.
His Winning Work:  The cast-in-place concrete stairs added to the north and south sides of Cunz Hall at The Ohio State University

The new cast-in-place concrete stairs on the north and south sides of Cunz Hall at The Ohio State University is the work of craftsman Doug Shawver.

The external stair towers are a portion of major renovations to the 66,000 square foot facility that was built in 1968.

Leading a crew of ten, Shawver constructed the walls and stairs in multiple lifts, ensuring that the new concrete would meet the existing elevations and comply with building codes for stair height.

After the first lift was placed, the second lift and the first level deck slab were placed concurrently. This format continued to the top of the five story structure.

The stairs are enclosed by glass walls leaving them open to public view from all sides, so the finished look was as crucial as the structural integrity of the product.

A member of Carpenters Local Union 200, Shawver has been employed by George J. Igel & Co., Inc. for 11 of his 24 years in the industry.

A first-time Craftsmanship Award winner, Shawver also worked on projects at Larkins Hall and Ohio Stadium at the university, and at Nationwide Arena and Port Columbus International Airport.
