2011 BX Craftsmanship Award Recipient

The Craftsman:  John Stamper of Martin Painting & Coating Co.
His Winning Work:  The decorative painting, stenciling, gold leafing and staining at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church

Attention to detail and extreme patience were two traits exhibited by John Stamper while completing the decorative painting, stenciling, gold leafing and staining at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Westerville.

Stamper led a crew of 22 to complete hundreds of hours of arranging stenciled stars throughout the sanctuary, and applying gold leaf in a starburst pattern to the center of the cupola above the alter.

With sloped ceilings throughout the church, Stamper had to capture exact measurements in order to precisely lay out the stars and gold leafing. When the prints didn’t quite match the surface, he recalculated the design layout in the field.

The work in the cupola was completed during the early stages of the project and was on an extremely tight schedule so the other trades could finish work in the same space.

Stamper’s experience and ability to coordinate schedules with the trades working simultaneously were vital to his success.

A professional painter for 25 years, Stamper has been employed by Martin Painting & Coating Co. for the past eight years.

Stamper is receiving his second craftsmanship award. He was also recognized in 2009 for his work at the Lincoln Theatre.
