2011 BX Craftsmanship Award Recipient

The Craftsman:  Josh Wright of Bruner Corp.
His Winning Work:  The installation of mechanical piping systems in the boiler room, chiller room and mechanical penthouses at Battelle

Josh Wright led a crew of 44 to install the mechanical piping systems in the boiler room, chiller room and mechanical penthouses at Battelle.

The project included piping for heating water, steam, chilled water and glycol. With more than 100,000 feet of pipe, the systems required extensive coordination to ensure functionality, appearance and maintainability.

A significant challenge for Wright was meeting the owner’s expectation of providing sufficient maintenance access to all components. Using BIM, Wright and his team were able to revise the initial design to achieve a satisfactory result.

The main piping systems and in-line pumps were installed above the air handling units to provide access from the top of the AHU’s, eliminating the need for maintenance staff to work off of ladders; and the branch heating water and steam piping were carefully racked horizontally to increase the corridor width between the air handlers and piping.

A member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union 189, Wright has been employed by Bruner Corp. for 10 of his 17 years in the industry.

This is Wright’s first Craftsmanship Award. A graduate of the Fire Academy, he began his career in plumbing while waiting for an assignment as a firefighter.
